DIY: Cyanotype Tote Bags

Cyanotypes are a total treat to make. You can go on a treasure hunt to find plants, press them, and design some adorable prints. Or, you can gather random household materials: utensils lace, doilies, ribbon, etc. and make prints from them. You can also make your own collage or papercut art, or even create a negative from a photograph, and create a print of that. collage has an awesome selection of random ephemera to explore, which make for great cyanotype print. We also have a plethora of surfaces to print on: fancy paper, canvas pouches, tote bags, backpacks, and more!

To create our cyanotype tote bags, we used the two-part cyanotype set by Jacquard. We have several cyanotype options however, like the pre-coated cyanotype paper packs, which are a better option for kids—either way, it’s a great project for a lazy summer day.

Read on to learn more about how to make cyanotypes prints.

New Products: Washi Tape Edition

It’s always exciting when we get in new styles of washi tape. In the last few days we have received a lot of new styles, see below!

Thin pastel washi tape on the left. A collection of chairs, tables, animals, and Studio Ghibli on the right (check out the tiny Miyazaki)!
We love rainbow washi tape. We also have some new cat and dog themed tape!
However, even though we are enamored with washi tape, customers often ask, “What is washi tape?” or, “What do I do with washi tape”? So, we thought we would dedicate a blog post to answer those very questions!

Washi tape is a high-quality masking tape made from natural fibers like bamboo, mulberry, or hemp (the word “washi” means “Japanese paper”). You can conveniently tear it with your hand, and it’s usually translucent. You can use it to wrap gifts, to seal envelopes, or to decorate and organize a planner or calendar. You can also write on top of washi tape, so it can be used for labeling too.

All of the collage stores have LARGE selections of washi tape; the most diverse and abundant collection of styles is at our Alberta St Store, where we have nicknamed it the #greatwallofwashi.

New Products Roundup: the Annex Edition!

Mother’s Day is May 14th, and with so many people shopping for gifts for their loved ones, we thought we’d remind you about our fun gift shop, collage annex!

We opened the annex in October 2016. It’s located on NE Alberta Street, on the same block as our original supply store, just a few doors down, at 1607 NE Alberta St.
The annex is open from 10am-6pm every day.

If you’re wondering how the annex is different from the original collage store, the annex focuses on fun home décor, accessories, and creative gifts. We found that people were asking for more gifty and pre-made items, and we just couldn’t fit all of it into our original supply store! We also couldn’t resist all of the creative gifts we were coming across.

The annex will feature thematic displays of items that will rotate and change, so check back often for new goodies.  Currently the themes include: celestial/space, garden, woman power, beach/ocean, pacific northwest, cats and dogs.  Alongside the themed displays are an assortment of other curated gifts such as beautiful candles, glassware, party and home decor and patches, pins, and prints by some local artists.

Classic cat goodies.

Below are some photos of new products for you to check out, and be sure to stop by next time you get the chance! While you're there, you might also stop by our supply store, where you'll find lots of ideas to make your own creative gift for Mother's Day; you can also check out our recent DIYs, including paper flowers, and textile kits for some ideas!

DIY: Paper Marbling

Recently we wrote about marbling in our post about Easter egg decorating, and we thought we’d devote a little more time this week to talk about the amazing process of marbling!

Paper marbling is an excellent craft to do as the weather gets nicer. It’s a great outdoor activity: since it's a bit messy, you won’t have to worry as much about clean-up afterwards when you're outside. The fresh air and sun will highlight the beautiful marbling process, and it will help your paper to dry faster (just make sure it’s not too windy!).

We love the classic black and white look!

Marbling is one of those crafts that may seem intimidating, but getting started with it is actually pretty easy and straightforward.

Read below for a step-by-step process and to learn insiders tips and tricks!

We are especially excited about cross-stitching this season (have you seen our spring window displays??). We have several new textile and cross-stitch kits at the stores, with patterns to make things like: keepsake vegan leather bracelets, bookmarks, pillows, metal cuffs, and more.

These kits are a great project to travel with on vacation, or to use as pre-teen party favors (we like how they remind us of making friendship bracelets at summer camp). This is a project that is low-cost and simple, but will easily keep you occupied for hours!

See our finished project and some helpful hints, below.

Product Spotlight: Chameleon Markers

We at collage are always excited about a product with great color, so today we want to highlight a cool new product bursting with color: Chameleon markers. These innovative markers are good for paper crafts, coloring books, manga, fine art and more. These markers are special because they can change tone as you color.

For instance, to create the images above, we used Strathmore Marker Paper, 6x8" pad, and just three Chameleon markers: YG3 (spring meadow), PK4 (peony pink), and BV2 (lavender).

This is a product that is great to use on-the-go: no need to travel around with a clunky bag of markers; with Chameleon markers, one marker will offer a large range of tones.

Maybe you’ve seen these around, and wondered how they work. We’re here to show you! Chameleon markers are available at all 3 collage locations. Read below to learn more about these unique markers.

Product Spotlight: Daniel Smith Watercolors

Spring is one of the best times to break out the watercolors. With colorful flowers budding up from the earth, and the rain starting to subside (hopefully!), it is a great time to pack up your paints, go outside, and do some plein air painting!

One of our favorite brands of watercolors is Daniel Smith Watercolors. These excellent paints are packaged and produced right here in the Pacific Northwest, in Seattle. The company has been around for more than 30 years, and their line boasts more than 240 brilliant colors!

With all of those colors, it can be a little overwhelming. So we are here to break it down for you.

We have Daniel Smith watercolors available at all 3 collage locations! We also have watercolor paper and brushes to get you all set up.

Daniel Smith Watercolors include three different lines: Extra Fine, PrimaTek, and Luminescent.

The Extra Fine line consists of specially formulated, handmade colors, with excellent lightfastness and bold color.

The PrimaTek line is all about antiquity; it’s about the colors used by old master painters: hues like Amethyst and Lapis Lazuli. These paints consist of precious gemstones and minerals that have been used in paints for hundreds of years.

The Luminescent watercolors include tiny particles of mica, which give the colors a shimmering effect. You can mix these colors with other colors, or use them right from the tube. Here is a collection of Luminescent colors on a sampler card:

As with many high quality paints, their price varies depending on the color (e.g. how rare or expensive the pigment that creates the color is). A little bit goes a long way with these paints, because of how highly pigmented they are.

To learn more about these different lines, head over to the Daniel Smith blog, which has a lot of information to look through, including tutorials, artists features, and contests. We especially liked this article about pigments.

For our project making simple watercolor floral wreaths, we used a combination of Extra Fine watercolors, and Extra Fine Iridescent paints. We also used Shizen rag watercolor paper, Princeton snap brushes, and a porcelain palette.

These watercolors would also work beautifully on a number of other craft projects, for instance crepe paper flowers, (see previous post)!

Happy painting this spring!

DIY: Crepe Paper Flowers

After a long winter, we can hardly wait for spring to be here! In the meantime we are making some colorful crepe paper flowers. In this blog post, we’re going to show you how to make crepe paper daffodils. These flowers are easy to make and fun to customize, playing with different colors of crepe paper and paint. The supplies for this craft are minimal, but the options are endless: they're beautiful to use as decoration, or to create an accessory. You can also wind several daffodils together to create a wreath!
