Lisa Congdon Pop Up Shop at collage on Alberta

We are thrilled to be hosting a Pop Up Shop with local artist and author Lisa Congdon at our collage on Alberta store this Saturday! We love Lisa's work. She's a fantastic illustrator, whose bright paintings burst with color and joy.

We thought we would devote a blog post to some of Lisa Congdon's work, and give you a preview of the pop-up shop this weekend, which is this Saturday, December 2nd, from 12-2pm at our Alberta St supply store! Lisa will be signing books, selling original drawings, paintings, prints, calendars, and more.

Portrait of Lisa Congdon

Lisa's story is a unique and inspiring one; she began taking art classes in her 30s, when she realized she wanted to change career paths and pursue a career in art. Since then, Lisa has worked with Martha Stewart Living, Chronicle Books, Random House Publishing, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), and many more. She has authored seven books, including an encouraging book for budding artists, illustrated books, and a series of coloring books for adults, called Just Add Color. Congdon was raised in both upstate New York and Northern California, before moving to Portland. You can read a great profile on her by clicking here!

DIY: Soy Wax Candles

Candles are a great craft for Autumn. They're an awesome option for a handmade holiday gift. They're also fun to burn during winter months, and they look lovely as table decorations during Thanksgiving dinner! Soy wax candles are relatively quick to make, and inexpensive.

collage has everything you need to get started making candles. We carry a variety of glassware that is suitable for soy wax candles. We also carry a variety of wick sizes. And, in addition to soy wax, collage also carries beeswax for your candle making needs. We often get questions about candlemaking at collage: how to add scents, what's the difference between different waxes, and more. We thought we would devote a post to help with all of these great questions!

DIY: Stitched Felt Sugar Skulls

Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a fantastic autumn holiday. If you're not familiar with it, it's a lively celebration and a devotion to the dead, celebrated throughout Latin America and especially in Mexico. It lasts for two days, November 1st and 2nd, and it is full of bright colors, parties to honor deceased family members, and huge handmade ofrendas (altars). These altars are decorated with things like sugar skulls, candles, marigolds, food, drink, and clothing. To learn much more about Dia de los Muertos, click here.

For our most recent craft night at Atlas Pizza, we stitched felt sugar skulls (see below), in honor of this holiday. In the tradition of sugar skulls, the skull represents a departed soul, with a name written on the forehead, and placed on an ofrenda to honor and encourage the return of this deceased spirit. It is a vivid way of celebrating those who have passed on.

We decided to devote a blog post to these felt sugar skulls, in case you missed craft night. You can find the template and instructions by clicking the jump below. All supplies can be found at collage.

At collage, we sell a variety of products that can easily be dyed, including backpacks, muslin bags, aprons, kitchen towels, and more. DIY: Cyanotype Tote Bags

Cyanotypes are a total treat to make. You can go on a treasure hunt to find plants, press them, and design some adorable prints. Or, you can gather random household materials: utensils lace, doilies, ribbon, etc. and make prints from them. You can also make your own collage or papercut art, or even create a negative from a photograph, and create a print of that. collage has an awesome selection of random ephemera to explore, which make for great cyanotype print. We also have a plethora of surfaces to print on: fancy paper, canvas pouches, tote bags, backpacks, and more!

To create our cyanotype tote bags, we used the two-part cyanotype set by Jacquard. We have several cyanotype options however, like the pre-coated cyanotype paper packs, which are a better option for kids—either way, it’s a great project for a lazy summer day.

Read on to learn more about how to make cyanotypes prints.

New Products: Washi Tape Edition

It’s always exciting when we get in new styles of washi tape. In the last few days we have received a lot of new styles, see below!

Thin pastel washi tape on the left. A collection of chairs, tables, animals, and Studio Ghibli on the right (check out the tiny Miyazaki)!
We love rainbow washi tape. We also have some new cat and dog themed tape!
However, even though we are enamored with washi tape, customers often ask, “What is washi tape?” or, “What do I do with washi tape”? So, we thought we would dedicate a blog post to answer those very questions!

Washi tape is a high-quality masking tape made from natural fibers like bamboo, mulberry, or hemp (the word “washi” means “Japanese paper”). You can conveniently tear it with your hand, and it’s usually translucent. You can use it to wrap gifts, to seal envelopes, or to decorate and organize a planner or calendar. You can also write on top of washi tape, so it can be used for labeling too.

All of the collage stores have LARGE selections of washi tape; the most diverse and abundant collection of styles is at our Alberta St Store, where we have nicknamed it the #greatwallofwashi.

A section of our massive #greatwallofwashi at our Alberta St location!

New Products Roundup: the Annex Edition!

Mother’s Day is May 14th, and with so many people shopping for gifts for their loved ones, we thought we’d remind you about our fun gift shop, collage annex!

We opened the annex in October 2016. It’s located on NE Alberta Street, on the same block as our original supply store, just a few doors down, at 1607 NE Alberta St.
The annex is open from 10am-6pm every day.

If you’re wondering how the annex is different from the original collage store, the annex focuses on fun home décor, accessories, and creative gifts. We found that people were asking for more gifty and pre-made items, and we just couldn’t fit all of it into our original supply store! We also couldn’t resist all of the creative gifts we were coming across.

The annex will feature thematic displays of items that will rotate and change, so check back often for new goodies.  Currently the themes include: celestial/space, garden, woman power, beach/ocean, pacific northwest, cats and dogs.  Alongside the themed displays are an assortment of other curated gifts such as beautiful candles, glassware, party and home decor and patches, pins, and prints by some local artists.

Classic cat goodies.

Below are some photos of new products for you to check out, and be sure to stop by next time you get the chance! While you're there, you might also stop by our supply store, where you'll find lots of ideas to make your own creative gift for Mother's Day; you can also check out our recent DIYs, including paper flowers, and textile kits for some ideas!
