Curious About Encaustic???

Encaustic Piece  by:  Bridget Benton

Been curious about Encaustic???
We have a wonderful all-day encaustic workshop scheduled in our Alberta St store's classroom this Saturday May 31st.

Encaustic Intensive -- All About Layers -- Saturday, May 31st
In this beginner-friendly workshop, we'll learn all about painting and collage with wax. We'll start at the bottom -- and learn a variety of ways to develop interest in your painting before you even apply the wax: paper, stenciled texture, and mark-making with wax-friendly media. We'll  build up layers, exploring different ways to create depth and make all the layers work together. Been running into challenges working at home? The instructor will be available to answer questions and help trouble-shoot.
Time: 11am - 5pm
Instructor: Bridget Benton
Cost: $90 + $20 supply fee

True Portland

We recently had a customer let us in on the special project that is True Portland: the unofficial guide for creative people.

Created and maintained by a group of Japanese friends, the book serves as a guide to everything creative in Portland. From sustainable restaurants & farmer's markets, to local coffee places, creative spaces, micro-breweries and small publishing houses. Its beautifully designed, filled with amazing photographs and is available for purchase through their site!

They also run a Facebook page under the same name. We were lucky enough to appear as a place of interest and one of our calligraphy classes was reviewed on their Facebook page! We're happy to be included and want to share our next calligraphy workshop coming up:

Uncial and Lombardic Calligraphy Workshop
Sunday, May 18th from 10am-5pm
$45, all supplies included
*Alberta location*
This workshop focuses on two styles of calligraphy
which were often used together in early book
transcription: Uncial: a common calligraphy of the
fifth century and Lombardic: which is still used
in monogramming today. Students will leave
with the beginning designs for a final project.

Representational Collage

This Saturday, May 10th, join us for one of our favorite classes, Representational Collage, at our Alberta location. This month, we're focusing on butterflies. Class is from 2-5pm, $40 for all supplies included. Students need to bring an 8x10 image of a butterfly to work from. Instructor, Susan Schenk has perfected the art of painting with paper. We're proud to boast about her being featured in the magazine Cloth, Paper, Scissors on more than one occasion!

Here she was featured in the Jan/Feb 2014 issue all about her technique.

“Representational collage invites you to see beyond the apparent. From a distance, these collages appear to be paintings, but up close you see a complicated jumble of separate parts. Appealing when viewed from afar, these collages are surprising when inspected more intimately. Using discarded materials as “paint” fosters the idea of finding beauty in the overlooked. Discover line, color, and form hidden in what others toss away.”  --Susan Schenk
