Collage: Design, Elements, & Infrastructures

In this full day workshop you will learn how to utilize collage elements, textures and paint along with design elements to create dynamic, complex, and colorful backgrounds upon which to build your collage. You will have the opportunity to develop richness & depth through color and element placement, glazing and imbedded collage elements; textural products will be introduced and utilized to provide changing surface which receive paint in unique ways; we wil explore transfers applied on various levels of collage, utilize decorative stenciling to enhance your compositions and create lively interest. If you want to know more about the complexities of collage, this is the class for you!

Printmaking for Papers & Fabrics PLUS Decorative Paper Techniques!

One of the demands of mixed-media work is finding the approriate element or color of element to work effectively in a new composition or complete a composition in process. Today mixed media is incorporating unique processes and applications which reinvent how we approach our work. THis workshop will introduce you to print-making technques using Acrylic products. We'll print on various papers as well as fabrics, do some deconstructed printing, learn positive/negative techniques, and more. In addition we'll make at leat a dozen "metallic" finish decorative papers which will enhance your future collage work!

Collage: Working on Alternative Surfaces

Plexiglas, Clear flexible vinyl, Tyvek, and Yupo make wonderful surfaces to explore with collage & paint! Win this workshop we will spend the day doing some "out of the box" collage-making together. We'll explore the beauty of working on these unusual surfaces and their unique responses to various paints. Lear do do "visual" color-mixing and reverse collage as well. Be sure to get a good night's sleep before class as you will be doing a lot of "inside out thinking!"

* 2-3 Pieces of acrylic (Plexiglas or other brand) 8x10 or smaller

* ½ yard of medium weight clear upholstery vinyl (try fabric stores or hardware stores)

* Tyvek fabric (sold as “kite fabric) or paper or both if you can find it!

* Collage elements (toner copies no need for reversals)

* soft gel or polymer medium

* palette knife

* package of makeup wedge sponges

* your favorite GOLDEN Acrylic paint colors

* baby wipes, unscented!

Chris will bring YUPO paper, additional paints, tools, and a goodie bag of GOLDEN Acrylic samples for everyone who attends!

Paper Clay & Mixed Media Workshop with Guest Artist Rogene Manas

Part One: Saturday, June 4th, 10am-2pm
Part Two: Sunday, June 5th, 1-5pm

Have fun in this two-day Workshop with Rogene Manas as she teaches you how she makes her mixed-media masterpieces. Learn to create paper clay relief on boards while incorporating unique collage, mixed media and painting techniques. This workshop is ideal for all levels.

Students will learn new methods of self expression and inventive mixed media techniques. Using Creative Paper Clay participants will learn how to sculpt relief forms onto boards the first day. The second day will be devoted to carving and sanding the air-dried pieces, and then finishing them using collage materials and acrylic paint. The result is a rich textural wood-carved effect that leaves people wondering how you made it.

Supply list

Each person needs:

Acrylic paints-- ivory black, titanium white, a warm red and a cool red, a warm yellow and a cool yellow, and a warm blue and a cool blue.
Paint brushes, one for detail plus at least 2-3 medium-small sizes. One should be cheap to use with glue.
A wooden sculpting tool with a pointed end--available at collage
Xacto knife (not a box cutter)
Pencil, eraser and black stylist marker of some kind
Elmer's Glue
2 plastic containers for water and glue/water combo
A palette for acrylic paint such as an 8x10 piece of glass, a white plate, a glass plate, or 2-3 white paper plates with plastic coating
Rolling pin or something that will work as a roller
Tape, masking or whatever
1 8x8 or 8x10 board (at least 1/4" thick)
8 oz Creative Paper Clay®
Small amount of Gesso

Things you can share with others:

--sand paper

--letter stamps, other things to stamp into the clay,

--heat guns or hair dryers to speed drying times

--scissors

--paper towels

Provided:

--Carbon paper for transfer

--Tissue paper, variety of colors

--Tissue for sketching designs

--Plastic sheeting for clay work

--The loan of wooden clay tool with a pointed end for those who do not have one (I only have about 10)

--Rubbing alcohol
